Trash,Treasure and Angel Wings

Beautiful Brevard

Gorgeous weather this week made cleaning the beach a beautiful thing. The sun was smiling on a blanket of beautiful bright blue and the air had a touch of coolness.   Along with wonderful weather, Fall in Florida means more seashells; rewarding us with             treasure among our trash.

On Thursday, October 13 we collected about 15 lbs of trash in around 45-50 minutes. The worst find: balloon strings. Necropsies on sea turtles have found balloon strings wrapped around their intestines.

Two celebrities happened to be at the beach that day....James 'Ourmess' from Gunsmoke and 'Sandy' Claus.

One of the reasons we clean the beach is because we enjoy spending time there. It's important to keep a healthy balance of work and pure enjoyment, so we did a bit of shelling.  We were blessed with a non broken angel wing shell, not easily come by, and a perfect whelk.  I'll call him Lawrence.

Dolphins breaking the surface greeted us Friday morning at Melbourne Beach.  It's always a thrill to see those amazing creatures. Another reminder of why we are preventing trash from being dragged back into the ocean.  At first glance the beach looked fairly clean but when you really look, it's all there... the bottles and plastic and today we found a huge tangle of shredded plastic that has jellyfish look alike written all over it.

Another 10-15 lbs of garbage and the satisfaction of knowing a little less trash remains. Time for some shelling....awesome shell day. I was shocked to find about 6 angel wings with no breaks.  Many people were out shelling along the tide line and I am happy to say.... with less trash for them to step on as they reach for the precious gifts of the sea.
