Trash Bash Beachside

Sunrise Park beach access, Indialantic
Keep Brevard Beautiful had their Trash Bash today from 8-noon.  We had a school thing, however, we did our own Trash Bash at the beach.  We spent about an hour and a half picking litter and picking shells.

We collected about 2 lbs of trash and 12 cigarette butts.

Spring Breakers are here!  Lots of teens and 20 somethings were enjoying our awesome weather. 80s F 20s C. We're glad that you're here but please be good to our beautiful Florida beaches.  If you brought it to the beach please take it with you when you go, that includes cigarette butts!  Thank you, enjoy your stay.

Man O' War- pretty poison
Sadly we came upon a dead sea turtle.  We reported it to the Sea Turtle Preservation Society- 321-676-1701- call this number in Brevard county if you find distressed or deceased turtles.   Poor thing had no head.  I suppose some predator made a meal out of it.  Life in the wild can be rough.  I can't watch those shows where you see lions hunting zebras.  It's brutal. I feel horrible for the poor zebra but a lion has to eat right?
I'm happy with my vegetarianism.

I recovered 9 ft. of rope, giving me a new total of......1195 ft or 398.33 yds.

Thanks for checking in,

Keeping it clean for turtles

Sunday, Soggy Sunday...

Palmetto Scrub at Coconut Point, Melbourne Beach
Scrap strap
With rain pouring down, it's not a beach day today.  However, yesterday was a gorgeous beach day.
Melbourne Beach was looking pretty good, we probably collected less than a pound of trash, two cigarette butts and this heavy duty plastic...
Meals Ready to Eat-menu 6- chicken with noodles

We heard a lot about these MREs during the hurricanes of 2004.  Some people were without power for weeks.  We were out for 10 days and later for 12 days. Thank goodness we had a gas stove!

I picked up 4 ft of rope, bringing my total to 1186 ft or 395.33 yds.
Beauty at the beach-Coral Bean plant
Of course there were bottle caps and plastic chips and evil jellyfish imitators; which were removed and disposed of.

Sea Turtle nesting season has begun. The massive leatherbacks are the first to begin laying eggs. (they can be over 1100 lbs) In May the Logger Head season will officially be underway.
Check out the Sea Turtle Preservation Society website for more information. www.seaturtlesspacecoast.org.

Have you hugged your beach lately?

My Blue Marble

KEEPING BREVARD BEACHES CLEAN

One good tern deserves another
Did Santa do that?
Florida, back on track!  No bundling today.  It was a t-shirt and flip flops day as temperatures rose to around 73 F, 21 C.  Winter in Florida, gotta love it.

Not the Oaklys!!
Bummer

We headed to Bicentennial Park in Indian Harbor Beach.
Hangin' with the royal  terns in IHB

Between the two of us, Lee and I probably only picked up about 6-8 lbs of trash today.
We relieved the beach of 4 ft of rope, creeping our total up to 1055 ft or 351.66 yds.

After our cleanup we visited the Sea Turtle Preservation Society shop: 111 Miramar Ave
Indialantic.  If you're in the area stop by, they have lots of cool arty items for sale, including lots of jewelry.  It all goes to help the turtles.

We had a wonderful talk with Ann and shared cleaning tales.
I was thrilled when she gave Lee and me each a blue marble.  It means a lot to me.
I had heard about the blue marble project through Sara Bayles' Daily Ocean blog.
Check it out for yourself at: www.bluemarbles.org
Ann taught me something today, I knew the planet was 2/3 water, however, I didn't realize we are matched with the earth in that we are also 2/3 water. (Am I the only one who didn't know that?)

Also the salinity proportions within us match that of the ocean.  Now I know why people say Mother Ocean. Love your mother, hug a beach.

Thanks for dropping by

Coconut Point Cleanup

KEEPING BREVARD BEACHES CLEAN
FOR LOVE OF PEOPLE
AND ANIMALS

Low tide and high temperatures(83F 26C) greeted us at beautiful Coconut Point Park in South Melbourne Beach today.

If you're in the area any first Saturday of the month, consider joining the Sea Turtle Preservation Society for a beach cleanup at this location. They meet at 8am.  They even provide bags and gloves.  Help keep the beaches clean for the critters.

Flotsam Francais

Little piece of Canada in the Florida sand

Debris on the beach is bad for all involved, however, I did get  excited when Lee discovered this pizza car from Canada (my homeland).  I still remember the company's jingle from way back when I was a kid.. 9-6-7, 11 11, phone Pizza Pizza, heyy, heyy!
One of two totes, loaded to the gills
Great find!
Then there's the rest of the junk.  Two full totes of broken plastic, bottle caps and mystery trash along with 39 ft. of rope.
We broke the 1000 ft. mark!! We have now collected 1031 ft. of rope.  That's 343.66 yds. eliminated as an entanglement issue for marine animals.

Thanks for vsiting.
Merry Christmas, Happy Channuka, happy whatever you celebrate.

This holiday season,
Raise a glass
Drain your mug
Get to the beach
Give it a holiday hug

With hope and dedication these beaches will not
one day be covered in 'wall to wall' debris
